Overview
Paddington originated with humble working class beginnings and has evolved into Sydney’s trendiest suburb. An eclectic mix of artists, restaurateurs, advertising executives and lawyers mingle happily while perfecting the art of the Oxford Street crawl and discussing real estate ventures. Here you can find some of the finest examples of Victorian terraces that border the picturesque tree-lined streets. Very few remain in original condition, however, as many are superb showpieces for what a contemporary renovation can do with limited space.
The suburb has a distinct village atmosphere that lures people to live, work and visit its wonderful collection of fine eateries and boutiques. It's well placed in that just about everything the city has to offer is easily accessible and just moments away.

The place to be seen
When it comes to entertainment, the Paddington resident is spoilt for choice. Renowned for the gallery-rich art enclaves, fine clothing boutiques and beautifully restored terraces, this is the place to be seen when dining out. Whether you’re noshing on some quality cuisine in some of the world-class eateries or sipping on a decaf latte in a chic cafe, you may find yourself swapping renovation stories with other local residents such as Thomas Keneally, Hugo Weaving or Jeanne Little. smile
There is a pub on nearly every corner and each one bears a distinct flavour in that quaint English pub way. This is the epitome of cosmopolitan living and when in Paddington one can enjoy a lifestyle of style and convenience.

Schools & Educationhappy
Many young families reside in Paddington and can easily walk to Glenmore Road Public, Paddington Public School and Sydney Grammar Junior School. It’s just a short trip to other fine Eastern Suburbs schools such as Sydney Girls & Boys High, Ascham, Kambala, The Convent, St Vincent’s, S.C.E.G.S, Cranbrook, Scots College, Waverley College, Sydney Grammar.

Transport facilities
There is a regular bus service (380) along Oxford Street that connects the city with Bondi Beach. Buses also service Bondi Junction and Edgecliff train stations.

Did you know?
• The ‘Paddington Estate’ belonged to James Underwood, who subdivided the land in October 1839

• A portion was acquired by Messrs Robert Cooper and Francis Forbes for the purpose of setting up a distillery

• Paddington was largely rural until the early 1840s. When Victoria Barracks began construction, there was a need for housing to accommodate the workmen and convict labour

• Paddington became one of the earliest working-class residential areas of Sydney

Shopping, Paddington, Sydney

Sydneysiders love to strut their stuff. They head for the newest really good restaurant, cafe or bar, the grooviest new promenade, or the smartest, nearest beach. They love to meet friends to eat, drink and be merry. There's an energy and boldness here that is irrepressible and uplifting. It's urbane, but fresh and curious.
With its wonderful climate and carefree lifestyle, Sydney has inspired some stunning young designers who have taken the multi-layered cultural influences and translated them into fashion.

The Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in Sydney sets the stage and has proved to be a highly successful venture, marketing Australian fashion to the world. Designers such as Collette Dinnigan and Akira Isogawa have become globally acclaimed.

Stroll up and down Oxford Street, Paddington, to see the funkiest designers. For more formal fashion, Double Bay is the place to shop. A trawl through the city arcades and streets - Skygarden, the MLC Centre, Chifley Square, Martin Place, the new Grace Bros fashion floor - should bedazzle the
shopper with alternatives.

Down at Bondi, view the best of Australian surf and beach wear that has blazed new trend trails internationally. If you can't find a 'cossie' (swimming costume) in Campbell Parade, there's something wrong. Don't miss the Mambo store for the ultimate in surf chic.

Sydney is a also an architectural dream. Many homes overlook the water or nestle in the bush, and are cantilevered over cliffs or dug back into the scenery (featuring light and space, layers of texture and looking outwards to the environment). This Australian architectural idiom was pioneered by Sydney architect Glenn Murcutt. It has been translated and adapted by many who have followed him.
